Here's what working more than 25 hours a week can do to your brain

Researchers from Meisei University and Kaio University in Japan and the University of Melbourne, Australia, studied and analyzed the employment practices and cognitive test results of 6,500 Australian workers divided into 3 groups : Unemployed / retired, working less than 25 hours per week and working 25 or more hours per week.

The data included in the study are as follows:

- Economic and subjective well-being.

- Family structures.

- Dynamics of the labor market.

The researchers focused on three main areas to test the subject's cognitive abilities:

- Working memory space.

- Engine speed, "split attention" range and visual scan.

- Readability.

Results:

According to Professor Colin McKenzie at Keio University: "Work can be a double-edged sword, it can stimulate brain activity, but at the same time, long hours of work can cause fatigue and stress , Which can damage the cognitive functions ".

After analyzing the data, the researchers concluded that:

1 - people working zero hours per week had lower scores than those who worked more than 25 hours or more per week.

2 - Workers aged 25 or more earned a higher score than those who did not work, but less than the "part-time group".

3 - persons working less than 25 hours per week had the highest scores in all tests.

Cognitive health should be seen as a top priority, not only for the benefit of the individual, but also for society as a whole.

Using empirical evidence, this study demonstrates that there must be a good balance between productivity and cognitive health (mental health).
