Paracetamol is sold most of the time without prescription (Doliprane or Efferalgan in France, Tylenol in North America, ...). For example in France nearly 500 million boxes were sold in 2012. One study shows that regular intake of paracetamol increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, digestive hemorrhage and kidney problems.
Researchers led by Prof. Philip Conaghan of the Leeds British Hospital have shown an increased mortality rate of up to 63% in patients who repeatedly consume high doses of paracetamol (3 g per day). A recent study shows that "the real risk of paracetamol is greater than what the medical community currently thinks," say the British doctors. Nick Bateman, a Professor of Clinical Toxicology at the University of Edinburgh, also believes that paracetamol remains the safest available painkiller and adds that, as with any drug, "it is advisable to take Lowest effective dose for the shortest necessary period ".
